unrecaptured

Never caught again

Unrecaptured describes something that has not been captured again after escaping or being lost.

A prisoner who breaks out and evades authorities remains unrecaptured.

The word also applies to intangible things that cannot be regained: the unrecaptured magic of their first meeting, unrecaptured youth.

In tax contexts, unrecaptured gains are profits not yet subject to recapture provisions.
