unplugged albums
Stripped-down live recordings
Unplugged albums are live recordings featuring acoustic rather than electric instruments, typically stripped-down versions of songs originally performed with full amplification.
The format was popularized by MTV's *Unplugged* series in the 1990s, which showcased rock and pop artists in intimate acoustic settings: Nirvana's unplugged album became one of their most celebrated recordings.
The term now applies broadly to any acoustic live album, whether or not associated with the television series.
