university mascot
School spirit symbol
A university mascot is a costumed character, animal, or symbol representing a college or university, used to build school spirit and rally crowds at athletic events.
The mascot typically appears at games, pep rallies, and promotional events: The university mascot led the crowd in a cheer.
Many schools name their teams after their mascot—Tigers, Bulldogs, Wildcats—while others have abstract mascots unrelated to team names.
