two second rule
Safe gap guideline
The two second rule is a driving safety guideline: maintain enough distance from the vehicle ahead that you'd take at least two seconds to reach their current position.
Drivers pick a fixed point, watch the car ahead pass it, then count.
The rule adjusts for speed automatically—faster travel means more distance.
Some extend it to three or four seconds in poor conditions.
