tribal citizenship
Native nation belonging
Tribal citizenship is legal membership in a sovereign Indigenous nation, particularly in the United States.
Each tribe determines its own citizenship criteria—often through blood quantum, lineal descent, or residency requirements.
Tribal citizenship confers rights within the nation, such as voting in tribal elections, access to services, and sometimes per capita payments from tribal enterprises.
It exists independently of U.S. citizenship: She holds tribal citizenship in the Cherokee Nation.
