transracial adoption
Interethnic family formation
Transracial adoption is adopting a child of a different race than the adoptive parents, most commonly white parents adopting children of color.
The practice raises questions about cultural identity and whether parents can adequately prepare children for experiences with racism: Transracial adoptees often describe feeling caught between worlds.
The term is distinct from interracial adoption, which can refer to any adoption across racial lines regardless of direction.
