tragic elements
Drama's darker aspects
Tragic elements are the components that make a story a tragedy—fatal flaws, inevitable downfall, suffering beyond what characters deserve, and the sense that catastrophe was somehow fated.
The term appears most often in literary analysis: The play contains tragic elements but ends hopefully.
Outside formal criticism, it can describe real situations with tragedy-like qualities: His rise and fall had all the tragic elements.
