trades in
Surrenders as payment
Trades in has two distinct meanings depending on context.
When someone trades in a vehicle or other item, they give it as partial payment toward a newer purchase: I traded in my old truck for a newer model.
The phrase also describes what someone deals in professionally or habitually: The gallery trades in contemporary art; He trades in rumors and gossip.
The first sense emphasizes exchange value, the second ongoing commerce or trafficking.
