tip one's hat
Polite head gesture
To tip one's hat is to briefly lift or touch the brim of a hat as a gesture of greeting, acknowledgment, or respect: He tipped his hat to the ladies as they passed.
The gesture is old-fashioned now that hats are less common, but the phrase survives figuratively to mean showing respect or recognition: You have to tip your hat to anyone who can pull that off.
