timber barons
Forest industry tycoons
Timber barons were wealthy industrialists who amassed fortunes through large-scale logging operations, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in North America.
Like railroad barons and oil barons, the term suggests both immense wealth and ruthless business practices, including land acquisition through questionable means and exploitation of workers.
The timber barons stripped the Upper Midwest of its old-growth forests within a generation.
The term is now primarily historical.
