Thunderbug is an informal name for thrips—tiny winged insects that seem to appear in swarms during humid, stormy weather.
They're notorious for landing on skin and crawling into crevices, becoming especially noticeable on hot summer days before thunderstorms: The thunderbugs were terrible at the picnic.
Also called thunderflies or storm bugs.
