through-lines
Continuous narrative threads
A through-line is a consistent theme, motivation, or narrative thread that runs from beginning to end of a work, performance, or experience.
The term originated in acting, where it describes the core intention that guides a character's actions throughout a play, but it has expanded to describe any unifying element that connects disparate parts into a coherent whole.
The through-line of her memoir is the search for identity.
In discussions of storytelling or analysis, identifying the through-line helps clarify what holds everything together.
