Spacecraft reentry protection
Thermal tiles are heat-resistant ceramic blocks designed to protect spacecraft from extreme temperatures during atmospheric reentry.
The Space Shuttle's exterior was covered with thousands of these tiles, each precisely shaped to fit its position on the craft.
The term sometimes extends to heat-insulating tiles used in industrial furnaces or architectural applications.
