tantalized

Tormented with desire

Tantalized means tormented by the sight of something desirable but just out of reach.

The word comes from Tantalus, a figure in Greek myth condemned to stand in water that receded when he tried to drink, beneath fruit that pulled away when he reached.

Someone tantalized by an opportunity can see it clearly but cannot quite grasp it: She was tantalized by the job listing but knew she lacked the qualifications.
