system halt

Computer stops completely

A system halt is a complete stop of computer operations, either intentional or due to a critical error.

Administrators may initiate a halt for maintenance or shutdown: The server will undergo a system halt at midnight.

Unplanned halts result from hardware failures, software crashes, or unrecoverable errors that force the machine to stop processing entirely.
