A superconference is an athletic conference formed by consolidating smaller conferences or absorbing teams from multiple sources, creating a dominant grouping with outsized influence over scheduling, television contracts, and postseason access.
The term emerged in college sports as traditional conference boundaries dissolved: The Big Ten's expansion toward becoming a superconference reshaped the landscape.
Sometimes used more broadly for any unusually large or influential gathering: The tech summit turned into a superconference with twenty thousand attendees.
