superbloom

Desert flower surge

A superbloom is an explosion of wildflower growth in desert or arid regions, triggered by unusually heavy rainfall.

The phenomenon transforms normally barren landscapes into carpets of color, drawing tourists and photographers: We drove out to see the superbloom in Death Valley.

The term gained currency in the 2010s as California experienced dramatic displays following drought-breaking rains.
