subway art
Transit station murals
Subway art refers to visual art created in or for subway systems, most often graffiti and murals painted on train cars, station walls, and tunnels.
The term gained currency in the 1980s when New York City's graffiti-covered trains became icons of urban culture and hip-hop aesthetics.
Today it encompasses both unauthorized graffiti and commissioned public art installations in transit systems worldwide.
