substages
Divisions within phases
Substages are divisions within a larger stage of a process or classification system.
The term appears in developmental psychology, where Piaget's stages of cognitive development contain substages, and in geology, where stratigraphic stages are subdivided into finer units.
Any staged process may have substages when finer distinctions are useful: The project moved through several substages before completion.
