subspecialties
Fields within fields
Subspecialties are narrower fields of expertise within a specialty.
A cardiologist might have a subspecialty in electrophysiology; a lawyer specializing in corporate law might focus on mergers and acquisitions.
The term appears most often in medicine and academia, where formal training and certification mark these finer divisions: She completed a fellowship in her subspecialty.
