sub-base
Layer beneath pavement
A sub-base is a layer of material beneath a base, particularly in construction.
In road building, the sub-base sits between the subgrade (natural soil) and the base course, providing drainage and load distribution: The contractor laid gravel for the sub-base before paving.
In mathematics, a sub-base is a collection of sets that generates a topology.
