stuffing the ballot box
Casting fake votes
Stuffing the ballot box is a form of election fraud in which someone adds fraudulent votes to an election, either by casting multiple ballots, adding fake ballots to the count, or tampering with vote totals.
The phrase evokes the image of literally cramming extra paper ballots into a collection box.
It extends figuratively to any scheme that artificially inflates support for something: They accused the fan club of stuffing the ballot box in the online poll.
