Watergate scandal
Seventies presidential crisis
The Watergate scandal was a 1970s American political crisis that led to President Richard Nixon's resignation.
It began with a 1972 break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate complex, then expanded to reveal systematic abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and illegal surveillance by Nixon's administration.
The suffix "-gate" now attaches to any political scandal: Bridgegate, Deflategate.
