studio musician
Recording session performer
A studio musician is a professional instrumentalist or vocalist hired to perform on recordings rather than as a permanent member of a band.
Studio musicians work anonymously behind countless hit records, valued for their ability to sight-read, adapt to different styles, and nail parts quickly: The producer brought in a studio musician to play the guitar solo.
Also called a session musician.
