stretcher cases

Carried wounded people

Stretcher cases are injured or ill people who cannot walk and must be transported lying down on a stretcher.

The term originated in military and medical contexts to distinguish patients requiring stretchers from those who could walk to treatment.

By extension, stretcher case sometimes describes someone in extremely bad shape, whether physically, emotionally, or from intoxication: After that all-night bender, he was a complete stretcher case.
