spy balloon
Floating reconnaissance platform
A spy balloon is a surveillance balloon used to gather intelligence, typically by floating at high altitude over foreign territory to photograph or monitor military installations and infrastructure.
The term gained currency in 2023 when the United States shot down a Chinese balloon that had drifted across North America: The spy balloon incident sparked a diplomatic crisis between the two nations.
