sports boycott
Refusing athletic participation
A sports boycott is the refusal to participate in or attend athletic competitions as a form of political protest.
Nations may boycott international events like the Olympics to condemn host countries or geopolitical rivals: The U.S. led a sports boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
Athletes, teams, or leagues may also boycott to protest social injustice or discriminatory policies.
