spoofed number
Disguised phone origin
A spoofed number is a phone number that has been falsified by the caller, making it appear the call originates from a different source than it actually does.
Telemarketers and scammers use spoofing to display local area codes or trusted numbers like banks or government agencies: The IRS doesn't call from spoofed numbers—that's a scam.
The practice exploits caller ID systems that weren't designed with verification in mind.
