speaking terms
Still civilly communicating
Speaking terms describes the minimal level of relationship where two people will talk to each other.
The phrase appears almost exclusively in negative constructions: They're not on speaking terms means they refuse to communicate, usually after a falling-out.
To be back on speaking terms is to have restored basic civility after a period of estrangement.
On speaking terms without negation is rare but suggests a relationship that's cordial if not close.
