soup strainer
Upper lip hair
A soup strainer is a kitchen utensil—a fine mesh sieve for removing solids from broth or puréed soups.
In slang, soup strainer refers to a thick mustache, especially one that overhangs the upper lip: He's been growing that soup strainer since the seventies.
The joke is that such a mustache would catch drips while eating soup.
