soft key
Unlabeled programmable button
A soft key is a button whose function changes depending on context, with its current purpose shown on an adjacent screen label.
Common on older mobile phones and office telephones, soft keys sit below the display, and the screen indicates what each will do: The left soft key said "Menu" so I pressed it.
The term distinguishes these from hard keys, which have fixed functions.
