social rituals
Shared behavioral traditions
Social rituals are formalized behaviors that mark shared occasions or transitions—greetings, weddings, funerals, holiday gatherings.
They follow unwritten scripts that participants understand: the social ritual of shaking hands, the social ritual of toasting at dinner.
Unlike private habits, social rituals require at least implicit agreement among participants about what the behavior means and when it's appropriate.
