slicking down
Greasing it flat
Slicking down is smoothing hair flat against the head using water, oil, gel, or pomade: He spent ten minutes slicking down his cowlick.
The phrase suggests a deliberate, groomed appearance—hair tamed rather than left natural.
Someone slicked down looks neat, polished, perhaps ready for a formal occasion.
