skill ceilings

Maximum achievable proficiency levels

A skill ceiling is the upper limit of mastery in an activity—the point beyond which improvement becomes impossible or negligible.

The term comes from video games, where some have high skill ceilings (rewarding years of practice) and others have low ones (quickly mastered).

Chess has a much higher skill ceiling than tic-tac-toe.

The concept extends to any domain where expertise matters: sports, instruments, professions.
