skid rows
Urban poverty zones
Skid rows are urban areas characterized by poverty, homelessness, cheap lodging houses, and social marginality.
The term comes from Seattle's Skid Road, where logs were skidded downhill to sawmills and transient workers gathered.
Now any city's district of flophouses, missions, and down-and-out residents may be called its skid row: He ended up on skid row after losing everything.
