skedaddling

Getting out fast

Skedaddling is running away hastily, especially in a panicked or cowardly retreat.

The word emerged during the American Civil War to describe soldiers fleeing battle, and retains a slightly humorous or dismissive tone: When the cops showed up, everyone went skedaddling.

It suggests undignified haste rather than strategic withdrawal.
