single-elimination tournaments
One-loss knockout brackets
Single-elimination tournaments are competitions where a loss immediately removes a participant from contention.
Each round pairs competitors, with winners advancing and losers going home—no second chances.
This format efficiently narrows a field to one champion through successive rounds, making it popular for brackets in sports playoffs, video game competitions, and office pools.
March Madness uses a single-elimination format, which is why upsets generate so much excitement.
