silt up
Choke with mud
To silt up is to become clogged or filled with silt—the fine sediment that settles at the bottom of rivers, harbors, and reservoirs.
Waterways silt up gradually over time, reducing depth and impeding navigation: The old canal had silted up and was no longer usable.
The process can also be described as silting up or getting silted up.
