short-term loss
Passing financial decline
A short-term loss is a financial loss on an asset held for a brief period—typically one year or less for tax purposes.
The distinction matters because short-term and long-term losses receive different tax treatment: She offset her gains with a short-term loss from selling the stock.
The phrase also applies more loosely to any temporary setback: Accept the short-term loss for long-term gain.
