Shitting oneself has two meanings, one literal and one figurative.
The literal sense is losing control of one's bowels—an involuntary release of feces: The patient was so ill he was shitting himself.
The figurative sense, more common in casual speech, means being extremely frightened: I was shitting myself before the interview.
The past tense shit myself or shat myself works for both.
