sharding
Horizontal data partitioning
Sharding is a database architecture technique that splits data across multiple servers or instances, each holding a portion of the total.
Rather than one massive database handling everything, shards distribute the load: User accounts A-M live on one shard, N-Z on another.
The term comes from database shards being fragments of a whole, like shards of broken pottery.
Common in large-scale web applications where a single database can't handle the volume.
