shanked it
Veered off wildly
Shanked it describes a badly mishit shot, originally in golf but now used across sports.
A shank occurs when the ball strikes the club's hosel rather than the face, sending it wildly off course.
The phrase has spread to any athletic failure involving poor contact: He shanked it into the parking lot.
More broadly, to shank something is to botch it completely.
