sexually-transmitted disease

Intimate contact illness

A sexually-transmitted disease is an infection passed between people through sexual contact—intercourse, oral sex, or other intimate physical exchange.

Common examples include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and HIV.

The term is often abbreviated STD, though STI (sexually-transmitted infection) has become preferred in medical contexts because many infections show no symptoms and "disease" implies illness.
