sensory illusion

False perceived experience

A sensory illusion is a misperception where the senses report something that doesn't match physical reality.

Optical illusions trick the eyes into seeing motion, distorted shapes, or colors that aren't there.

But illusions affect all senses: a phantom phone vibration, a sound that seems to come from the wrong direction, the rubber hand illusion where you feel touch on a fake hand.

The brain constructs perception from incomplete data, and sensory illusions reveal where those constructions go wrong.
