semi-modular

Partially interchangeable components

Semi-modular describes systems with some but not all components that can be independently connected or reconfigured.

Most often applied to synthesizers: a semi-modular synth has a default signal path that works without patch cables, but also offers patch points for custom routing.

The term appears in other contexts—software architecture, furniture systems—where modules are partially interchangeable but maintain some fixed relationships.

The semi-modular design lets beginners play immediately while giving advanced users room to experiment.
