sell one's soul

Trade integrity away

To sell one's soul is to sacrifice integrity or principles for personal gain—money, power, success.

The phrase alludes to the Faustian bargain of trading one's eternal soul to the devil: He sold his soul to get that promotion.

Often used hyperbolically about compromising values: I feel like I sold my soul taking that corporate job.
