scratch building
From raw materials
Scratch building is constructing a model or project from raw materials rather than from a kit.
The term comes from the idiom from scratch, meaning from the very beginning with no prepared components.
Model railroaders, wargamers, and hobbyists scratch build when commercial kits don't exist or when they want complete creative control: He scratch built the entire village using balsa wood and styrene.
