saw coming

Knew it would

To see something coming is to anticipate it before it happens.

The phrase almost always appears in past tense and often in the negative: I didn't see that coming, Nobody saw it coming.

When someone does see it coming, they recognized warning signs others missed: She saw the breakup coming for months.

The phrase implies that foresight was—or should have been—possible.
