safety stops
Protective shutdown mechanisms
Safety stops are brief pauses made during an ascent in scuba diving, typically at around 15 feet for three to five minutes, allowing dissolved nitrogen to leave the body gradually and reduce the risk of decompression sickness.
Though not mandatory for all dives, they're considered standard practice: We did our safety stop before surfacing.
