round towers
Tubular medieval structures
Round towers are tall, slender stone structures with conical caps, built primarily in medieval Ireland as bell towers and refuges attached to monasteries.
Their doorways sit well above ground level, accessible only by ladder—a defensive feature against Viking raids.
The term also applies to similar cylindrical towers found in Scotland and elsewhere.
